Captain Ed Glover presents the Mike Smalley Rose Bowl to winner Rob Oubridge

Dan Barnett, winner of the IPA Trophy for the lowest gross score

Duncan Wood and his guest Graham Cox won the afternoon greensomes competition

Three trophies are contested at our annual summer meeting - a fixture that in recent years has seen blazing sunshine and soaring temperatures add to the test posed by the heathland at Woking Golf Club.

The IPA Trophy is awarded to the player with the lowest gross score, while the Mike Smalley Rose Bowl is awarded for the best stableford score. The summer meeting also features the Maurice Napper Trophy for Doggedness, which is given to the player with the biggest increase in stableford points between the front nine and back nine.

2023 report

We may have endured the wettest July on record, but bright sunshine and a light breeze greeted a field of 32 IPAGs for the Summer Meeting at wonderful Woking.

But if the weather gods were smiling, the same cannot be said for the green staff, who must have been in a foul mood given some of the pin placements. With holes tucked away behind bunkers and on tiny shelves, there were four putts aplenty, and the scoring demonstrated the challenge posed by Woking’s large and undulating putting surfaces.

The winner of the Mike Smalley Rose Bowl for the best stableford score was Rob Oubridge, who took full advantage of his home course with a score of 34 points, pipping Dan Barnett and John Farrell into second and third respectively.

Dan Barnett took the low gross trophy with a score of 80, while the guest stableford was won by Tim Albert with a haul of 28 points. The Maurice Napper Trophy for Doggedness, which is awarded to the player with the biggest improvement in stableford points between the front and back nine, was won by Toby Shortland, who managed five points on the front side and 11 on the second nine.

Scoring improved for the afternoon greensomes, no doubt helped by an excellent lunch and a thorough examination of the club’s wine list. Duncan Wood and his guest Graham Cox squeezed home on a countback with a score of 37 points, beating Jon Davie and Dan Andrews thanks to a birdie-birdie finish.
