Rob Oubridge retained the Mike Smalley Rose Bowl

Gary Brandon won the IPA President’s Trophy for lowest gross

Three trophies are contested at our annual summer meeting - a fixture that in recent years has seen blazing sunshine and soaring temperatures add to the test posed by the heathland at Woking Golf Club.

The IPA Trophy is awarded to the player with the lowest gross score, while the Mike Smalley Rose Bowl is awarded for the best stableford score. The summer meeting also features the Maurice Napper Trophy for Doggedness, which is given to the player with the biggest increase in stableford points between the front nine and back nine.

2024 report

In stark contrast to the blazing heat of recent years, a full field assembled for the Summer Meeting under leaden skies and a distinctly unpromising forecast. And while we managed to avoid the worst of the rain, the damp conditions softened the challenge posed by Woking’s famously tricky greens, resulting in some impressive scoring.

The Mike Smalley Rose Bowl for the best stableford saw three players tied at the top with 39 points – Gary Brandon, Matt Reynolds and defending champion Rob Oubridge. A countback saw Woking member Oubridge come out on top – a gross score of one under par on the back nine giving him 23 stableford points.

The IPA President’s Trophy for the lowest gross score was also keenly contested. IPAGs veteran and four-time winner of the title John Farrell signed for a creditable 75, but was pushed down into fourth place on countback as Matt Reynolds and Duncan Wood also recorded the same score. But Gary Brandon took the spoils with a four-over par of 74 – a particularly impressive feat given he only recorded one birdie.

The Maurice Napper Award for Doggedness was claimed by Alan Thompson, with a 10-shot improvement between his front and back nine stableford tallies, while the guest stableford was won by Paul Jones with a score of 32 points playing off scratch – an impressive gross score of 75.

The good scoring continued into the afternoon greensomes, despite a heavy downpour that had a number of members contemplating another pass at the dessert course after lunch. No less than three pairs managed a two under score of 38 points, but a 40-point haul by Dan Barnett and his guest James Smith was enough to take the spoils.
