The Royds Trophy

The final of the Royds Trophy brought two heavyweight pairs together at New Zealand, as Mark Alford & Nick Carter took on Matt Reynolds & Steve Kilpatrick. The foursome teed it up on an unseasonably-warm October day, and the fireworks started early as Kilpatrick birdied the first hole. The match went back-and-forth as it took until the 14th before a hole was halved.

Reynolds made a clutch birdie putt on 17 to tie the match as the players headed for the 18th. All four narrowly missed the putting surface, and a nerveless chip to under a foot was enough to see Alford and Carter to a tense 1up victory.

We had a record field of 42 pairs enter the 2024 event, so both pairs battled through five rounds to reach the final - congrats to all four of them. The trophy presentation will take place the winter meeting at AGM on 20 February 2025.

The Royds Plate

The final of the Royds Plate saw Royal Wimbledon members Andy Byrd and Chris Pinnington host Tom Darlington and Garrett O’Reilly. A tightly-contested match with high-quality play by both pairs saw the match go down the last, when a win for the home team tied things up, sending the game to extra holes. Byrd and O’Reilly both made the green on the tough first hole in regulation, and a 25-foot birdie putt by the visitor O’Reilly was enough to secure the win on the nineteenth hole - congratulations to both teams on a terrific game played in great spirit.

The Royds Trophy was reintroduced in season 2002 after it had been sitting in a cupboard at the IPA for several years.

It was originally donated by Nicholas Royds who had founded the Royds Advertising Agency and was a member of the society. It is played for annually as a knock out four-ball better ball competition. Teams are made up of members of the society ideally from the same agency but if not possible then simply by finding a member to partner you. The final is always in October and can be contested over 36 holes if agreed by both pairs, otherwise it is 18.
