With ongoing course works at our regular autumn venue Royal Wimbledon, the Autumn Meeting again took place at Hayling Golf Club, an oft-overlooked links gem on the South Coast. Hayling provided a stern test in the wind back in October 2022, so the field of 22 golfers braced themselves for a stern examination over a hearty full English before commencing play at midday.
Bright sunshine and a sporty two-club breeze made for a classic day of links golf, but the lead group made light work of the conditions with some impressive early scoring.
Dan Smith posted the clubhouse lead with an impressive 36 points off a handicap of seven - a birdie on the final hole bringing him home with a gross scores of 78. Playing alongside Dan was vice captain Jon Davie, who managed 34 points - a tally that looked good for second place until the final group made it to the last hole.
Live scoring via GolfGenius showed Austin Saunders was ripping up the back nine, and a birdie on the last with a shot would have seen him pip Dan Smith on countback. A crowd gathered on the clubhouse balcony to make sure Austin knew the state of play - alas an aggressive birdie putt from the front of the green meant he had to make do with a five net four, and 34-point total that claimed second place on countback.
Chairman Andy Byrd continued his recent run of fine form, taking both the F John Roe Senior Salver and Golden Oldies Trophys for best over 50s and over 60s scores respectively.
Dan Smith went home with both the Mitchell Autumn Trophy for the best stableford score and the D’Arcy Trophy for the lowest gross - well played Dan!
